Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me.

Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Catching Fire Arena on Google Maps

For those of you who have seen my 75th Hunger Games Arena Visual Guide...

...I was just alerted to the fact that Google Maps has been updated with overhead satellite images of the filming set for the arena's central pool for the upcoming movie adaptation of Catching Fire. A delightfully ironic twist seeing as how I made my own map using stitched satellite photos from Google earth.

Filming took place last summer at a man-made beach in Georgia's Clayton County, a site that was orginally built for the 1996 Olympics. Full story here: [link]

If you look, you can spot many of the exact same landmarks I was able to visualize from the book's descriptions depicted in the partial set (to be no doubt completed in full later with careful editing and CGI) that was physically built on the site:
